Special Container Database
This database is accurate as of 24-02-10 and is updated quarterly.
This database contains information about actual products that are recognised as either special containers or calendar packs. When dispensing these products, it is legally acceptable to ‘round' the quantity dispensed to the nearest pack or sub-pack as set out in Part II of the Drug Tariff. Actual products are listed with details of the manufacturer.
This database also includes information on the Part VIII products which are considered to be special containers or calendar packs for the purposes of calculating reimbursement to contactors. These products are listed in the database with the reference ‘Drug Tariff part VIII generic'.
It is important to note that whilst some generic lines are listed in the Drug Tariff as standard packs, there may be specific manufacturer's products which are recognised as calendar packs or special containers and vice versa. If a Part VIII line is prescribed generically, reimbursed would be calculated in line with the Drug Tariff listing (including any recognition of special container or calendar pack status) even if a specific manufacturer's product which was classified differently was dispensed. Care should be taken to ensure correct endorsement, in particular if the actual prescribed quantity is dispensed rather than the nearest pack/sub-pack.
Detailed information on the rules affecting special containers and calendar packs can be found in the PSNC Online Drug Tariff Resource Centre.
