Prescription Checking

The PSNC National Prescription Research Centre (NPRC) carries out checks on the pricing of NHS prescriptions. This is done both on a routine basis and to investigate the accuracy of payments made to individual contractor accounts where there is evidence to suggest an error may have been made in prescription pricing at the PPD.

All LPC areas are covered by routine checks and at least one bundle of prescriptions for each month checked is selected from each LPC Area. Information on the error rate identified by the Centre can be found in the PSNC Annual Report and is used in negotiations with the Department of Health.

Where errors are discovered during the checking process, the individual accounts are corrected by the NHSBSA Prescription Pricing Division and the contractor concerned is notified.

Checking staff also note any incorrect endorsements made by the contractor and inform the contractor of this along with information on corrections made to the account.

The Centre also checks the price changes of drugs and preparations included in the master file at the NHSBSA Prescription Pricing Division. This includes ensuring that the prices in the Drug Tariff and Master Appliance files are correct.

'Prescription Checkers' Pricing Prescriptions

In 2007, the Information Department moved from our North London Office to the main PSNC office in Aylesbury. From here, PSNC provides a telephone information service for contractors, with advice on subjects such as the Drug Tariff, endorsement requirements and the prescription pricing process.
