NHS Prescription Statistics (2002 & 2008)
Guide to the NHS Monthly Remuneration Statistics
PSNC produce monthly statistics based on the Prescriber Dispenser Report (PD1), which the NHSBSA produce. More information on the various terms used in the statistics can be found below:
The cost of sales, gross profit, fees received and total payment per prescription are all represented in £'s per prescription. Statistics for the current year and the previous year are shown this way each with the current month for both years compared to the results for the mean average results of all the other months of that year. In addition for the current year these results are represented in percentages.
The cost of sales is the sum of the ingredient cost and container cost less the discount received.
The gross profit made is the fees received and this is the calculated by deducting the cost of sales from the total payment per prescription.
Other information found in the staistics included the totals for the month in millions of Net Ingredient Cost (NIC), Prescription Volume, Fees, and Gross Profit. These totals are calculated as before for the current month in the current year in both figures and percentages, and for the current month in the previous year.
The total payment per prescription is the ingredient cost of the item less discount received plus container cost plus the fee received for the prescription.
The NIC is the average cost of drugs per prescription item.
