MUR

MUR image- the Medicines Use Review and Prescription Intervention Service

The first Advanced Service introduced within the NHS community pharmacy contract was the Medicines Use Review (MUR) and Prescription Intervention Service.

The service consists of accredited pharmacists undertaking structured adherence-centred reviews with patients on multiple medicines, particularly those receiving medicines for long term conditions.

National target groups have been agreed in order to guide the selection of patients to whom the service will be offered. The MUR process attempts to establish a picture of the patient's use of their medicines - both prescribed and non-prescribed. The review will help patients understand their therapy and it will identify any problems they are experiencing along with possible solutions. A report of the review will be provided to the patient's GP where there is an issue for them to consider.

Directions, Guidance and Service Specification

The legal basis for the service is provided by the Secretary of State Directions. The service specification provides a 'plain English' version of the Directions

The Pharmaceutical Services (Advanced and Enhanced Services) (England) Directions 2011

MUR service specification (January 2012)

PSNC and NHS Employers have produced detailed official Guidance on MURs for pharmacy contractors, their staff and PCTs.

A list of suggested questions has been developed to help shape the discussion pharmacists have with patients during the MUR consultation. The questions are not compulsory, but pharmacists may find them useful to obtain the maximum amount of information from the patient’s perspective as is possible.
