CPPE launches 'Older People: Managing Medicines' learning programme

The Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) has announced the launch of Older people: managing medicines – a new open learning programme designed for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in community, primary and secondary care.

Older people: managing medicines reflects on which members of society are considered to be older people, and what care national and local frameworks and guidelines state they should receive. The programme examines changes in older people – including physical, mental and social changes, as well as pharmacokinetics and dynamics – and what impact these have on medicine use. Older people are often at greater risk due to polypharmacy, adverse drug reactions and concordance issues, and an overview of risk assessment and management is provided. The importance of teamwork is also covered, with consideration given to who provides care to older people, their roles and how pharmacy can contribute.

The programme includes an accompanying web-based fact file on the presentation and management of diseases commonly seen in older people. An online assessment can be taken via the CPPE website.

All of the learning materials for Older people: managing medicines and other open learning programmes are available to download for free. More information can be found at: www.cppe.ac.uk
