Change in paediatric Oseltamivir dose

The attached letter has been issued by DH setting out the changes in Oseltamivir dosage resulting from a variation in the Market Authorisation granted to Roche for the treatment of children under 6 months of age. All new guidance applies to the liquid formulation Oseltamivir Oral Solution 15mg/ml and PCTs have been asked to quarantine the lower strength 12mg/ml Oseltamivir Suspension.

DH will be issuing two new authorisation vouchers - one for children up to 3 months and one for children aged 3 months and under 1 year of age, which should be received by GPs by 14 December 2009. The existing vouchers should continue to be used until the new ones are received. The old ones should then be destroyed. The new vouchers also allow for use for prophylaxis and the three annexes included with the letter provide the new dosage charts for treatment and prophylaxis for the age groups concerned - newborn to 1 month, over 1 month and up to 3 months, and over 3 months and under one year.

This is the second recent change in dosage and no further changes are expected in the near future.
