Ditropan 2.5mg/5ml elixir shortage

In March 2011 the manufacturer Sanofi-Aventis issued a recall of all unexpired stock of Ditropan 2.5mg/5ml elixir. They have indicated that stock is unlikely to be available in the market for at least 24 months. As such there is currently no licensed product available in the market for Oxybutynin 2.5mg/5ml oral solution.

PSNC has requested that Oxybutynin 2.5mg/5ml oral solution be removed from Part VIII of the Drug Tariff, contractors should however be aware that while the preparation is listed in Part VIII of the Drug Tariff, prescriptions written for the generic preparation would only be reimbursed at the Drug Tariff price. If dispensing an unlicensed preparation, contractors should ensure prescriptions are specifically written by the prescriber so that it is clear the prescriber is requesting supply of an unlicensed product from a specials manufacturer. This will ensure payment is based on the endorsed price rather than the Drug Tariff Part VIII price.
